MTS Sensors magnetostrictive liquid level sensors are ideal for both tank level gauges and processing level measurement controls. MTS sensors are more than level indicators or transmitters, these level transducers provide level, interface and temperature measurement simultaneously.

MTS has been the world leader in magnetostrictive sensing technology for more than three decades. In fact, we invented it. That's why you can depend on the MTS name for the most accurate and reliable liquid level sensors made today.

Our Level Plus liquid level sensors provide the precise measurement you need, whether it's determining if there's sufficient inventory to produce the next batch of high-value medication, or verifying leakage from an underground storage tank. We designed these sensors to deliver accurate and reliable measurements of product levels, interface levels and temperatures in virtually any application or environment, through a single opening in the vessel.

Level Plus liquid level sensors accurately sense liquid levels up to sixty feet in a wide array of applications, and you can count on them measuring liquid levels, not foam. They are not affected by changes in dielectric constant or changes in atmospheric or temperature conditions. These sensors do not require re-calibration, and they perform each of these diagnostics: calculation error, absence of level reading, average temperature error, digital thermometer status, and Modbus/DDA errors. Our liquid level sensors have earned explosion-proof and intrinsically safe product approvals from FM, CSA and Cenelec.

MTS liquid level sensors are the preferred choice in the pharmaceutical, biotech, specialty chemicals, semiconductor, propane, petrochemical, and food and beverage industries.

So, whether you're seeking liquid level gauges, indicators, transmitters, or sensors for tank or processing applications, only MTS has the technology and expertise to answer the call for liquid level controls.

Accuracy, reliability, repeatability.
With MTS high-volume Commercial Level Sensors, you don't have to sacrifice performance for cost. With our Temposonics CSPR-based sensors, you get high-volume, smaller packages and lower-cost solutions for your commercial level applications.

MTS invented magnetostrictive and SEF technologies and we are committed to being the vanguard of product and application development. MTS sensors offer higher-performance and reliability than any other solution from any other company. Today's storage and processing facilities and high volume applications demand innovation, cost-effectiveness and accuracy. Only MTS has the technology and expertise to answer the call.

Magnetostriction

In a Level Plus sensor, a pulse is induced in a specially-designed magnetostrictive waveguide by the momentary interaction of two magnetic fields. One field comes from a movable permanent magnet usually housed in a float, which passes along the outside of the sensor tube, the other field comes from a current pulse or interrogation pulse launched along the waveguide. The interaction between the two magnetic fields produces a strain pulse, which travels at sonic speed along the waveguide until the pulse is detected at the head of the sensor. The position of the magnet is determined with high precision by measuring the elapsed time between the launching of the electronic interrogation pulse and the arrival of the strain pulse. As a result, accurate non-contact level sensing is achieved with absolutely no wear to the sensing components.

The level transmitter is composed of three concentric members:

  1. An external permanent magnet usually housed in a float.
  2. A protective, product-compatible outer pipe that withstands aggressive liquids or harsh process industry applications.
  3. Waveguide sensing element.

The heart of the transmitter design is the innermost member - the waveguide - a formed element constructed of a proprietary magnetostrictive material. Competitors' magnetostrictive sensors use inferior materials and processes in the manufacturing of their waveguide elements, and cannot match MTS waveguide performance or signal integrity.

A low current interrogation pulse generated four times per second by the sensor electronics creates an electromagnetic field when it is transmitted along the length of the waveguide. When this magnetic field interacts with the permanent magnetic field created by an external magnet usually mounted inside a float, a torsional strain pulse or waveguide twist, results. This waveguide twist is detected as a return pulse. The time between the initiation of the interrogation pulse and the detection of the return pulse is used to determine the level measurement with a high degree of accuracy and reliability.

In addition, MTS is the only manufacturer of flexible waveguide sensing elements. This feature enables MTS to ship longer sensor products in smaller package sizes saving on shipping costs and also drastically reduces installation time and cost in a variety of applications due to the flexible mounting of the sensing element.
