In a Level Plus sensor, a pulse is induced in a specially-designed magnetostrictive waveguide by the momentary interaction of two magnetic fields. One field comes from a movable permanent magnet usually housed in a float, which passes along the outside of the sensor tube, the other field comes from a current pulse or interrogation pulse launched along the waveguide. The interaction between the two magnetic fields produces a strain pulse, which travels at sonic speed along the waveguide until the pulse is detected at the head of the sensor. The position of the magnet is determined with high precision by measuring the elapsed time between the launching of the electronic interrogation pulse and the arrival of the strain pulse. As a result, accurate non-contact level sensing is achieved with absolutely no wear to the sensing components.
The level transmitter is composed of three concentric members:
A low current interrogation pulse generated four times per second by the sensor electronics creates an electromagnetic field when it is transmitted along the length of the waveguide. When this magnetic field interacts with the permanent magnetic field created by an external magnet usually mounted inside a float, a torsional strain pulse or waveguide twist, results. This waveguide twist is detected as a return pulse. The time between the initiation of the interrogation pulse and the detection of the return pulse is used to determine the level measurement with a high degree of accuracy and reliability.
In addition, MTS is the only manufacturer of flexible waveguide sensing elements. This feature enables MTS to ship longer sensor products in smaller package sizes saving on shipping costs and also drastically reduces installation time and cost in a variety of applications due to the flexible mounting of the sensing element.
